Diptyque

Diptyque
In Paris, in 1961, three friends, Desmond Knox-Leet, Christiane Gautrot and Yves Coueslant, galvanised by their insatiable artistic curiosity and incessant dialogue with paints, decorative elements, interior design, illustration, calligraphy and theatre set out to spontaneously express their intuitions and viewpoints of the world by founding a shop they called diptyque.

Visitors found a mix of liberty and avant-garde audacity, a taste for the unusual and the fantastic and a passion for art as well as intimate encounters with the traditional expertise of yesterday and today. Their plan was to sell printed fabrics, but they suddenly became the talk of the 6th arrondissement when they started offering the unique objects they’d found around the world. And their first foray into the fragrance world in 1963 would transform the boutique at 34 boulevard Saint-Germain into a place to enjoy the unexpected sillage of candles scented with tea, hawthorn and cinnamon.
